Aikido - not Your Average Martial Art
By Cj John
Aikido is not your average martial art. There is a significant difference between aikido and other forms of self-defense in the martial arts. The difference is mainly about the motivations and characteristic effects of the practice of aikido. These concepts are taught usually very early on and continually throughout the student’s training. Mainly, these are the differences: 1. Aikido is, in it’s purest form, an art of self-defense. It is a practiced technique that becomes reflexive and automatic in response to unprovoked attacks. And, in the process, no serious injury is inflicted upon the attacker, but the melee is well and truly met. 2. Hara – or “center” – is stressed as a point of concentrated effort. There is also predominant emphasis upon “ki” or “inner energy”. These concepts are already familiar to many followers of Eastern philosophies. 3. The strategies and movements of aikido are singular to this art. Techniques, movements, displacements are forms developed by and for aikido. Aikido invokes responsibility in the student in two ways. One, that a person has the right to defend oneself and, given the extensive training involved, gives ample opportunity for optimal development. Second, aikido espouses the philosophy that one is not to inflict damage upon the attacker, but is only meant to deflect and end the skirmish. You will not find aikido as a competitive sport, as have become other martial art forms, like karate. Aikido remains true to the original intention of “budo” – Japanese martial arts – that being the training and cultivation of the spirit. It seeks to maintain the philosophy espoused by Master Morihei Ueshiba, founder of aikido, of the constant training of the mind and body as the basic discipline for human beings walking the spiritual path. It is through actual training in aikido that one becomes fully aware of the true meaning of this philosophy. To quote Master Ueshiba, “Never cease forging your mind and body to refine your character through training—this is the first principle.”
